Currently: May

Hi everyone!
Time is flying by, I can't believe it is May already!
It feels like just yesterday I was doing the April Currently.
I am linking up with Oh Boy 4th Grade for her May Currently.

Listening: It is SO nice to not have to hear anything after a long day of school! I love the peaceful quiet at night.

Loving: I am sure that we can all agree on this one. I can't wait for the summer! Even though I go until the end of June, it will be here before we know it.

Thinking: I have so much to do every night lately. It is already very late and I still have so much to do to prepare for tomorrow.

Wanting: I have been dying to go to the beach lately. It has been HOT here during the day lately (At least for me, maybe not too hot). Plus, our schools don't have air conditioning. All I can think about in the ridiculously hot rather warm classroom is going to the beach,  I love going to the beach in the summer and can't wait to go this year.

Needing: Okay, I guess I don't need new summer clothes, but I LOVE summer clothes. I love dresses and skirts and bright colors. I will definitely be doing some summer clothes for teaching posts soon.

Summer Bucket List: I really want to create a lot of TpT things this summer. I am so excited to finally have free time again and be able to get a lot of things done.

Just a reminder the Teachers Pay Teachers Site Wide sale for teacher appreciation ends tomorrow. If anyone is interested in purchasing anything from my shop for 28% off tomorrow is the last day! Click here to go to my store.

Sight Word Legos

Hi Everyone!
I wanted to share about something that I have been LOVING for the classroom lately!
This is not my original idea, I got the idea from Miss Martin's Classroom.

I actually used this while I was tutoring, but I definitely plan to use it in the classroom as well.
It is so simple, put sight words on Legos to get kids motivated. (You can really put sight words on anything.)

I created a little game where I hold up one Lego at a time and he has to tell me the word. If he gets it right, it goes into his "tower". If he doesn't get it, it goes into my "tower". We created towers of seven since we were in the library, whoever had the most towers at the end wins.
I love this because you can change them anything to fit a certain child's needs and they are easy to change once you need harder words.

I bought this box of Mega Blocks at Walmart for around $10.
I used small Post-Its for the words because I thought that I could just cut out the sticky part and stick them on and they would be easy to change out. I spent about an hour cutting them out and writing the words on all of them, when I came back a few hours later the Post-Its were already starting to peel off. I knew that with kids using them, the words would be falling off and it would be a pain. I ended up putting scotch tape over them after so that they would stay and they have been great! It will be a little bit harder to change out now, but for now they are great.

Have a great week!

Tutoring

Hi everyone,
Did you all start the countdown? I did! 43 days left for us!

For the past few weeks I have been tutoring a few times a week. I am really enjoying it and so is the first grader that I am working with. He is doing really well with the things we have been doing and I wanted to share the routine. I am working mostly on reading, writing and sight words with him. This is great for working with a child one on one, but I am sure it would work well for small groups too.

1. The first thing that I do is test him on the sight words. I divide the sight words that I want him to learn into smaller lists and work one small list at a time until the whole list is done. Once he masters the list I let him pick out a sticker to put on the top so that we know he has mastered that list.

Here is the first list that we have mastered.
2. The next thing that we always do is pick one of the sight words that he doesn't know. I have him tell me a sentence for that sight word and I write it on a strip of paper with the sight word in a different color than the rest of the words (I just cut a piece of green paper into thirds but, you could also use a sentence strip.). Then I cut the sentence apart in between each word and mix the words up. I have him put the words in order and then glue it onto a piece of white computer paper. Then he reads the sentence to me and I have him point to the sight word. After reading it, he writes the whole sentence underneath and circles the sight word. I will sometimes put a mistake in the sentence, like a capital letter in the middle or no period at the end, and have him find the mistake. Every once in a while throughout the time that I am with him, I will take out the sentence and ask him to tell me the sight word, by the end he usually knows it pretty well.

3. The next thing that I do is my favorite part. I use the making words folder from Teacher Bits and Bobs. You can get the template for free here. You just have to print out the template from her blog and glue the two pages to the inside of a file folder. You can laminate them opened if you want to (I didn't and it is fine). Then, I used the small size post its and cut them in half. You just write the letter from the template underneath and put it on top. I have him create words and then write them down on a piece of paper. I think this really helps with writing words and blending sounds together. In the beginning, he wanted to make really simple words that he already knew how to spell. Now, I have him "experiment" and put a beginning consonant and a vowel and we will try out different endings until we find a word that makes sense. It is a little bit of work to put together, but is definitely worth it!

4. Usually at this time we take a 3-4 minute break.

5. Next, I like to do writing and reading. I will usually bring a book that he can read and have him read it and then we will do some kind of writing about it. Sometimes I will bring a reading response sheet that will ask questions like, "What is your favorite part?" and "What was the setting of the story?". One day we read a non-fiction book about dolphins and wrote facts about them. Sometimes we will read a book and do some writing that has to do with the book, but may not be a question. For example, a few days ago we read a book about a birthday party and wrote things that you need to do to get ready for a birthday party.

6. I always like to end with a game, I think that they need it after working for a while and they leave happy. I have been playing a few different sight word games lately. I created sight word go fish cards that he LOVES. They are so much fun and really are great for learning sight words. I use the dolch word lists and I have them in my Teachers Pay Teachers shop and my Teachers Notebook shop if you are interested.

Another game that I have been playing with him is sight word Candy Land. I got the cards from Ironic Adventures. You can get the cards from her blog here. This is great, you just use your regular Candy Land board and pieces and use the sight word cards instead. They have to read the words correctly and if they do, they get to move the amount of spaces that are on the card.

I hope this is helpful to any of you that are tutoring or working with small groups.
I will be posting more things that I do while tutoring soon.
Have a great (hopefully fast) week!

Five for Friday

fiveforfriday

Hi everyone,
I am linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for another Five for Friday.
This week went SO fast and I can't believe that it is Friday already!

1. I was doing a short internship in a high school this week and it was crazy interesting. I worked with an amazing teacher and I loved working with students one on one, but I would never be able to do it on a daily basis. It was a great experience and I am happy that I went, but I am now positive that I want to be an elementary school teacher!

2. We had weather in the 80s at the beginning of the week! It was really hot, but such a nice change! (It didn't last long, it was 40 degrees today.) We were finally able to take the kids out for recess, they were so excited! Once we got outside, one of our little girls was on a swing yelling "freedom!". (It has obviously been a long winter.)

3. I started tutoring a first grader after school, I had the first two sessions this week and it went really well! I am going to share more about the things that I am doing soon.

4. My favorite show, Glee, came back this week. Did anyone see it? It was about a school shooting. At first I thought that it would be too hard to watch and didn't know if I would be able to watch the whole thing, but it turned out to be a very powerful and moving episode.

5. That's really it for this week, I was not in class for most of the week and is went so fast!

Farm Unit

This week we have been working on a farm animal unit. The kids have been loving it!
We have been reading books, working on activities from my farm animal unit and did a cute project.

Here is the bulletin board that I created. (Sorry about that big, annoying TV on the side.)

I made the barn with a big piece of red bulletin board paper, some white strips of construction paper and brown border for the roof.

We read these to books by Rachael Bell from our school library:
They had really great, simple facts about cows and pigs. The kids really loved learning about them.

Then, the kids had to write facts about them on the farm writing paper. They did so well, I was really impressed!

I love the pictures the pictures they drew!

They got to choose between a cow and a pig and got to create their animals.

I love the way they are all different, especially the cows. They all look awesome!

We have also been working some different activities from my farm animal unit. Here are some samples:

The project templates and writing paper is free to get it click this link:

Enjoy!

I am doing another linky party today with Farley from Oh' Boy 4th Grade.. I have always loved reading these on other people's blogs!

Listening~ The quiet is SO nice after a long day with kindergarteners! Since we have gotten back from spring break our three day weekend, it seems like the kids are so much louder!

Loving~ The Voice, does anyone else watch it? This is the first season that I have watched it and I am loving it! I have also been loving Easter candy (I bet I am not the only one!) especially Cadbury eggs, they are so good!

Thinking~ We are working on a farm animal unit this week, there will be more posts to come including a cute project sometime this week or weekend.

Wanting~ New clip art, is anyone else a clip art hoarder? I can't get enough! I have been loving KPM Doodles but would love to find new shops.

Needing~ Another spring break, I guess summer is soon enough...

Advice~ Create products or blog about what you know and are good at. Stay within your comfort zone.

Five for Friday

Hi Everyone!
I am so excited to be doing my first Linky Party today!

Here are five random things about my week.

1. This week was spring break! (Well, not really) We only had Tuesday and Friday off because of snow days and hurricane Sandy, but it is still nice to have two days off.

2. Since we were in school for three days this week we got to do a lot of Easter themed activities. We used activities from my Easter Math and Literacy Activities. We used all of the activities and had the kids rotate from center to center. We have half-day kindergarten so it took two full days. They did really well with it and really enjoyed it. The Read it, Stamp it, Write it was definitely a favorite!

3. My blog is going to be getting a makeover! Within the next few days my blog will have a whole new look, I can't wait!

4. It is finally getting a little bit nicer out! (Even though we were expecting snow on Monday.) I am so excited to be wearing these again! I wore them twice this week, I love my Sperrys!

5. I am throwing a sale on TpT! My favorite five products are 20% off until Sunday.
